Fireworks Over Rockport – Project 52 Week 8

Feb 21st, 2010 Posted in Photography, Project52, Projects, Travel | 2 comments »

Once again I’m digging a photo out of my archives.  Hopefully Nikon will have returned my camera by next week.  This photo was take on July 4, 2009 in Rockport, MA.  We spent the weekend at my sister-in-law’s place, which has a beautiful view of the beach.  I took this photo standing across the street from her driveway.  It was my first attempt at photographing fireworks.  I still have a lot to learn, but I love the contrast of the bright lights against the dark sky and the reflection of all the colors in the water.

Sunflowers for Sale – Project 52 Week 7

This photo is one “from the archives”.  I sent my camera out for a good cleaning because there’s dust on the low-pass filter.  It leaves unsightly spots on my photos, and I wanted to have it taken care of before Angelina arrives.  So this week, and possibly for the next week or two, I’m using recycled photos.

I took this photo at the Groton Farmers Market at Williams Barn last summer.  I look forward to the start of the season every year.  In addition to all the local produce, there are a variety of baked goods, flowers, and even handmade soaps and the like.  I loved the way this one vendor had arranged her sunflowers, so I just had to snap a picture.

Tiny Socks – Project 52 Week 6

I think I’ve entered the “nesting” phase of pregnancy.  I’ve spent much of the last few days working on the nursery (and nagging my husband to do the things I can’t) and sorting and washing baby clothes, diapers, etc.  So you’ll forgive me if my obsession spills over into my Project 52.

I squealed with delight when I realized just how tiny our daughter’s socks are.  I don’t think my feet were every tiny enough to fit in these things.  (Seriously, even at birth I was a sasquatch.)  Now I know why so many baby books and web sites recommend putting them in a mesh laundry bag before washing.  These little treats are just too tempting, and the washer or dryer is bound to gobble them up otherwise.

Wolf Moon – Project 52 Week 5

Jan 31st, 2010 Posted in Photography, Project52, Projects | no comment »

In case any of you missed it, last Friday was the Wolf Moon.  The name comes from Native Americans who had a different name for each full moon of the year.  It refers to the hungry wolves they’d hear howling around this time.

Another unique thing about last Friday’s full moon was the apparent size.  It appeared so large because the full moon coincided with its perigee.  Perigee is the point in the moon’s orbit at which it is closest to the earth.

I braved the cold (seriously, it was 12ºF at the time, with the wind chill at -5ºF) to try my hand at some lunar photography.  I’m pretty happy with the results.  I’m surprised at how much detail is actually visible in the photo.

The second photo is taken from almost the same position as the first, but instead of focusing on the moon, I focused on the branches of the tree I was viewing it through.  I thought it had kind of an eerie quality, so I’m including it in this post.

Asian Lady Beetle or Goomba In Disguise? – Project 52 Week 4

Every winter we get a few of these little buggers deciding to take up residence in our house.  They’re cute enough when they’re up near the ceiling out of reach.  Get too close, though, and…ugh!  They’re just as ugly as any other bug!  I was brave enough to get even closer with my macro lens in hand.  Zoomed in?  You guessed it…even uglier!  But…doesn’t the head kind of look like an angry Goomba from Mario Bros. fame?  No?  It’s just me then?  Humph…
