Michel was born in 1720 in Trois Rivieres, Quebec. He was married three times. He first married at age 20 to Marie-Anne at Yamachiche. She gave him two children: Marie-Joseph (1740) and Marie-Anne (1742). His wife died one month after giving birth to his second daughter. In February 1743 Michel married for the second time to Marie Carpentier at Ile-Dupas. She gave him 11 children: Michel (1743) who died a few weeks after birth; Marie-Francoise ((1744); Marie-Louise (1746); Marie-Genevieve (1747); Michel (1749); Joseph-Marie (1751) who died two weeks after birth; Joseph (1752) who died at birth; Genevieve (1752); Marie-Joseph ((1754); Noel (1755); and Marie-Joseph (1757). Marie died while giving birth to her last child on 12 August 1757.

Michel wasted no time in marrying again, this time to Marie Joseph Beaugrand. She gave Michel yet another child, Marie-Angelique, who was born in 1759.
